NNVNPS Hickory Hollow New Year’s Day Walk

New Year’s Day is the perfect day to get outside and start the New Year off naturally and focused on plants.  A number of years ago our Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society started a New Year’s Day Walk at Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve but the scourge of Covid forced that to be canceled for the past few years.  But alas, the Walk has been reinstated this new year for Sunday, Jan. 1 at 1 pm with the co-sponsorship of the NN Audubon. The temperature is predicted to be in the fifties.

Citizen Science Butterfly Census Count

The actual in-the-field butterfly count will take place on May 25th and follows the North American Butterfly Association’s count protocol as well as COVID-19 protocols. This citizen science data project began in 1993 and collects data from over 450 sites. It is similar to the oldest continuing citizen science project in the US (119 years), the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Details on this butterfly count will be provided at the workshop as well as in local papers next week.

Field trip to Meadowview Biological Station, Fredericksburg VA

On Wednesday, May 16th, we will be traveling to Meadowview Biological Research Station south of Fredericksburg to visit a site dedicated to the preservation and restoration of rare wetland plants, habitats and associated ecosystems on the coastal plain of Maryland and Virginia.  Meadowview’s particular area of specialization is the endangered habitats of bogs and seepage wetlands that contain pitcher plants. We will have a presentation by Dr. Phil Sheridan, the founder and a director of Meadowview and a driving force for longleaf pine and pitcher plant preservation in Virginia. There will be a minimal amount of walking but bring a camera.  There should be opportunity to purchase plants and related items.

We will meet at 10 am at Meadowview which is located at 8390 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, VA 22580.  It is about 80 miles north of Kilmarnock.  For more information or car pooling, contact Kevin Howe at 571-232-4592
