No Traditional Native Plant Sale This Year

There will be no traditional Native Plant Sale and no Market Days Make-up Sale at Wicomico Parish Church this year. The stars are not aligned this year—masks, gloves, sanitizers, social distancing—plus comparing notes with other like-minded local non-profits, made us come to this conclusion.

Northern Neck Native Plant Society (NNNPS) board and other members looked over the Master Gardener rules for working at their public gardens; we looked at how other VNPS chapters are handling sales, we noted the cancellation of Boots & BBQ, the scaling down of Farmers Markets, etc.  Many greenhouse nurseries are closing or scaling down as well.  The world is upside down.

With most of us at a “vulnerable age”, we are looking for a safe way to introduce our native plants into the landscape safely and cost effectively. Many of us have propagated seeds, potted up trees or other plants, babied them through wet & dry. Our consensus is that all plants earmarked for the September 12 sale will be made available to our Native Plant members and other interested plant enthusiasts.  We are exploring ways to do this. One way is direct sales by the propagators who would handle the sales transactions, including delivery/pickup arrangements.

NNNPS is so sorry that things didn’t work out this year.  Our Native Plant Sale is our signature event that many of our friends look forward to every year. Safety and health of our members and guests are of prime importance.

Please pass along the word:  Plants are here!  Our members have available:  White oak trees, milkweeds, uncommon jack-in-the-pulpits, swamp hibiscus, wild strawberries, beautyberries, and many others.  Stay tuned for details and a full list.
