Betsy Washington highly recommends these two upcoming talks
Hi everyone,
Betsy Washington highly recommends these two upcoming talks, for which some will have already seen earlier promotions, by a couple of our more accomplished native planters. Chris Ludwig is already known personally to some, and has previously given at least one in-person talk to the NNNPS. Please try to make time for one or both; if unavailable at those hours, we’ll try to get the url for their recordings and publicise them when released.
Thanks, Judy Lang
Chris Ludwig will be presenting a zoom talk tonight, January 13, 2021 from 7:00 – 9:00pm sponsored by the VNPS on The Conservation of Virginia’s Native Plants. This promises to be extremely relevant to native plant enthusiasts. I must say over 50 folks attended the zoom presentation, with over 30 being members of the public who were very excited about the lecture, Hickory Hollow and the flora and wildlife discussed. Such great audience questions. We should tap into some of this enthusiasm!
In this zoom program, Chris Ludwig will examine the mounting threats to our native flora and then look at work that is being done to mitigate these threats. This critical conservation work is shared among numerous government agencies, private, and non-profit organizations and individuals.
Chris Ludwig has explored the flora of Virginia for over 32 years. During his explorations, he has documented over 1,000 rare plant populations and has discovered or co-discovered 20 new plant species previously undocumented from the Commonwealth, two of which are new to science. Chris served as Chief Botanist for the Natural Heritage Program of Virginia’s Dept of Recreation and Conservation until his retirement in 2019 and was instrumental in working on the Flora of Virginia.

Tomorrow night, January 14, Charles Smith will be presenting another interesting talk via Zoom for the Potowmack Chapter but open to the public on Climate Change and Making Room for Nature. I have had Charles lead field trips into Huntley Meadows on wetland and wet meadow ecology and native plants and he is very knowledgeable and a gifted teacher.
